Grey Gardens is a mixed-use project space in Fitzroy, Melbourne, established to house the formerly itinerant picture house, Speakeasy Cinema, which was never supposed to be just a room with a cinema screen.
______The focus here is fisheye: expanded and contracted in the space between a black box and a white cube. We shape-shift between a gallery, project space, cafe & larder and a screening room. We are a concept store, hall of mirrors, coffee-stop and thoroughfare. We are the first and last draft and the drink that got you there.

Grey Gardens is a 1976 documentary film by Albert and David Maysles that follows the eccentric lives of Big and Little Edie Beale: mother and daughter, high-society dropouts, reclusive cousins of Jackie Onassis, fashion icons and bedroom philosophers. The film is considered a cult classic and a landmark for the ‘direct cinema’ style that lets life simply unfold on screen.

“To my mother and me, Grey Gardens is a breakthrough to something beautiful and precious called life.” — Edie Beale, 1976
All kinds of things happen between the white box and black cube. We call it the Project Space, a place where conversations, performances, movements and incantations come alive.

Speakeasy Cinema is a film series that has been gypsying around Melbourne since 2009. It now has its own home in the saw-toothed mansions of Grey Gardens, Fitzroy. We only show films that we think are worth talking about, on, or off the rocks.
